This primitive cotton pillow has the most sly reference to Halloween we have ever come across. Hint: It is the precursor to those pointy black hats, straw broomsticks and plastic cauldrons so popular this time of year.

  • Smart Spaces with smartwater

    Smart-spaces-with-smartwater

In this economy, its all about making do with what youve got and turning that make do into make amazing! If you dont have room for a full office in your apartment, for example, you dont have to move or do a major renovation in order to get one! Transforming underused areas into functionally fabulous spaces that work for your needs is the latest craze in DIY home design, and fueling up with smartwater when youre doing it will keep your creative juices flowing. Here are three places that are easy to repurpose into the office of your dreams, with links to some at-home transformations we loved:

    1. Dining Nooks: Many older homes and apartments have these, in addition to formal dining areas, but who has both a breakfast table and a dinner table these days? Hit the thrift shops or Craigslist for a small vintage desk or a dining hutch that can be adapted into a desk. If necessary, drill a couple of holes for power cords and electronics ventilation. Voila! A petite, perfect office! PS many nooks come with built-in seating that, with a little extra cushioning, can serve as your desk chair.

    2. Closets Galore: Willing to part with some precious, precious clothing storage space? (You probably dont rrreeeeeally need seven identical little black dresses, after all!) Smaller closets make great vertical mini-offices! Install shelving and wall-mounted canisters along the side and back walls of the closet and paint the shelves and closet walls contrasting colors. Fit in a board or tabletop at desk height to serve as a work space. Remove the closet doors, or leave them and use them for additional storage too, with over-the-door organizers and small shelving units. You can also take inspiration from the classic Murphy Bed and install a fold-down desktop in the closet.

    3. Built-in Entertainment Units: If your home was built in the 90s or early 2000s, there might be a prefab TV unit with shelving built in to the living room walls. Most TVs these days, however, are too large to fit into those small square boxes - not to mention all the DVD players, Wiis, DVRs, and the like we need to go along with ‘em. They make perfect offices, however! Take out a couple lower shelves and doors to fit a space for a chair, if necessary, or just install a pull-out keyboard tray.

The best part of crafting your dream work space? Youre not bound by the beige restrictions of cubicle land! If youre inspired by 60s pop-art prints and bold colors, go for it! Likewise, if youd prefer a cool, zen space to get your brain in gear, feel free! Paint the walls, trim, and furniture your favorite colors, line drawers and shelves with wallpaper samples, hang your favorite prints, and add a plant or two. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as turning wasted space into functional, fashionable ones. Of course, whatever DIY office you end up with, make the finishing touch an ice-cold bottle of smartwater to keep you hydrated while you work.
