Taking Things Seriously: 75 Objects with Unexpected Significance
A small collection of bobby pins abandoned by a departed lover, a blameless wide-mouth jar, a residual ceramic horn from a college student’s “unicorn stampede.” This charming book contains 75 photographs of sentimental objects and the stories behind them. When your copy arrives, head to your favorite coffee shop and settle in for a happy afternoon.

Boy Smiling Head
They also have a girl head, and they’d make fantastic book ends. Please click through just to read the excellent description of the product, which reads, in part:
“What you see is the prize for the “best friend”-contest held yearly in most Finnish speaking schools since 1954. The best friend is selected by the winner’s classmates. To receive one you need to have been: glad, vigorous, reliable, friendly, orderly, helpful, empathic et-cetera…”

Metro Woven Jacket
I wear this everywhere.
Tim Gunn says that one of your ten wardrobe basics is a “sweatsuit alternative.” This lightweight shell with cool contrast sleeves is the perfect sweatshirt replacement. Paired with yoga pants and a tank, it makes me look all sporty without looking like I could easily be wearing a jockstrap under my mannish workout clothes. Hooray for athletic companies that notice I have boobs!
(Regulary $75. Also comes in taupe with blue contrast.)

Sigg Water Bottles
I adore this thing. It keeps tap water cool and crisp, reigns in my expensive and destructive plastic water bottle purchases, and helps me keep track of how much water I drink in a day. Also, the bottle opening is little, so I’m not constantly sloshing water all over myself while I’m on the treadmill. It comes in a kazillion colors and designs, but my favorite is the swirly black and white. Go get one.

If you’re giving bath or body products as gifts, lavender is a classic choice. This lovely set comes in a fair-trade woven grass box.
It features the basics: body cream, bath salts, and silky, thick shea hand cream that comes in a glass jar. Apparently I am a complete sucker for a glass jar.

Petite Pattern Book Series
These books give my brain stretch marks. Each one has 140 patterns presented in EPS files for Illustrator and JPEG files. That means you can change the size and color of every pattern to design your own wrapping paper, stationery, recipe cards, whatever. I believe there are eight books in the series, and you’ll want every last one.

Philosophy Pure Grace Soap and Water Set
My friend Sarah treats herself to this scent set, because she has a thing about soap.
She says, “I am obsessed with smelling clean. I don’t want to smell like flowers or fruit or any of that teenage stripper bullshit; I want to smell like I just stepped out of the shower, all day long.”
And thanks to her secret weapon, she does.

The Standard Shave Cream
My husband loves this shaving cream. He says it’s unctuous, and leaves his skin feeling moisturized. I like it because it makes his face smell clean, but not musky like some shaving creams. The scent is a mixture of sandalwood, yling ylang, and lavender. It smells like he just came in from doing light yard work. Guys who do yard work are hot.
