An exhibition of twenty-four artists, which you pick up at a local photo developer. Here’s how it works:

ASDF doesn’t make any money on the deal, so you’re just paying for the prints. Neat, right? We think so too.

Meat! No recipes, no restaurant reviews, Meatpaper is “your journal of meat culture,” and they don’t mean it ironically.
This awesome magazine hails from foodie-haven, vegetarian-friendly San Francisco, and its mission is to document the “fleischgeist.” What’s that, you may ask, with your mouth full of bacon? It’s the emerging interest in our meat’s origins, how we relate to it, and why it’s so extra tasty.
Full disclosure: Co-founder Sasha Wizansky is an acquaintance of mine, so I’m rooting for her. I’m also rooting for a scratch-and-sniff cover next issue.

Very affordable in sets.” If you’re not the sort who throws sushi parties, these would make dramatic snack holders. The green ones would look especially great with a handful of dried apricots and some walnuts. Thanks, Isabel!

Old Cavendish Fruitcake
I’m mostly listing this because I think sending fruitcake on Christmas is funny, but also because these cakes got good reviews around the office. They’re packed with nuts and real dried fruits, as opposed to the weirdly colored fruity gels you find in most cakes. The consensus seemed to be, “If you like fruitcake, this is good fruitcake.”

JPG Magazine
We’ve posted about JPG before, but now it’s all grown up. The little, though gorgeous, chapbook of amateur photography has morphed into a full-sized, glossy magazine with a much more budget-friendly price tag. Full disclosure: JPG is the brain child of my pals Derek Powazek and Heather Champ, who are both unreasonably talented, so I’m feeling pretty excited for them. This week, Mighty Goods readers get $5 off any subscription (discount code MIGHTYG), including the extra fancy gift subscriptions that come with a useful mini-tripod.

Curiosa
I posted about this book on the ReadyMade blog a couple weeks ago and realized that I’d never mentioned it here. It’s one of my favorite gifts for thinkie types. Here’s what I said: Curiosa has me spellbound. If you were the type of kid who saved special pebbles, scraps of paper, or important leaves, Barton Lidice Benes’s book of “obsessive assemblages” will hook you.
I couldn’t skip a single item-the communion wafer from JFK’s funeral, a bit of mummy dust, jelly beans from Ronald Reagan’s desk, Roy Rogers’s nasal douche. Item by item, the artist explores our acquisition instinct by grouping small, fascinating objects in illuminating ways. Something about this book satisfies the part of you that wants to be remembered with love. So ispiring.$30 at Amazon

Anchor Old Potrero 18th Century Style Rye
A pet project of the Anchor Steam Brewery on San Francisco’s Potrero Hill, Old Poetrero Rye is their attempt to recreate the original American whiskey. Rye is nearly impossible to find in bars or liquor stores, so if you know a whiskey lover, this is a can’t-miss gift. Old Potrero is made in a small copper pot still at the distillery, and aged for a year in Oak barrels. There’s never enough to go around, so get yours while it’s in season and available.

My friend Heather cannot say enough about this teapot. The site has a very clear description of how it works: “When tea is ready, simply place it atop your cup. Fresh Hand and Body Lotion
Raw Beauty sent me a bottle of their “Black Raspberry Vanilla” lotion a while ago, and I didn’t pay much attention. This is because I’m a packaging whore, and I didn’t like the bottle. After all, half the appeal of a good lotion is how it looks pretty on the counter. Then I set the bottle on my desk and started using it when my hands were feeling chapped. It leaves my thirsty hands feeling silky and it has a subtle scent – like rich-girl neck. It also reminds me of a bowl of cream with a few raspberries tossed in. Anyway, when I realized that I might just order more when my stash runs out, I figured it was high time to tell you guys about it. Hemp oil plus carrot extract equals crazy softness.

Mighty Leaf Tea Sampler
Delicious! When I admitted to being a tea freak, a bunch of my readers (most notably, Elise) sent notes urging us to post about Mighty Leaf Teas. I feel silly to have forgotten about Mighty Leaf for so long, because they’re an old favorite. Mighty Leaf packs tasty, whole-leaf tea into convenient, silky tea bags. (Most other tea bags are filled with crushed, bitter leaf flakes that are practically undrinkable.) This sampler gives your favorite tea snob 108 moments of peace, and many of the teas are even better on second brewing. Includes: Breakfast Americana, Earl Gold, Vanilla Bean, Orange Jasmine, Marrakesh Mint, Green Tea Tropical, African Nectar, Chamomile Citrus, and Mint Melange. (If you want the tea, but don’t need the pretty box and menu, you can purchase a refill box for only $54.)

Plus, it smells edibly good, like zingy lemon pie, so nail biters should steer clear. Also works on thirsty elbows and heels.

Travel Scrabble
We went camping recently, and friends brought along this handy travel-Scrabble game, so we could play by the campfire. The tiles snap into their racks, and the ridges on the board are deeper, so you can even play while you’re in transit. Plus, it’s itty bitty, so you can slip it right into your backpack and still have room for the Scrabble Dictionary. Nerd.

Pink and Brown Down Throw
A few weeks ago, I go a note from Jay Arnold gushing about these down throws from Target. He called them a “steal” and noted that they’re super soft and warm. They come in several colors, the cover is made of a polyester micro-fiber, and the fill is 75 percent duck down and 25 percent fiber. Also, (and you know I’m a sucker for this), you can throw them in the washing machine.

Love Nuts
Love Nuts aren’t nearly so risqu’e as they sound, though they do come in a close second to sex.
The lightly caramelized nuts are covered in silky milk chocolate, and then dusted with dark cocoa. They’re crunchy, creamy, a tiny bit salty, and more effective than Prozac. If have a touch of PMS, an irritable boss, or a tantrum-prone kid, these babies will pull you back from the edge.
I like the cashews, but you can also get them in almond, hazelnut, pecan, and macadamia. At only ten bucks a bag, they make excellent, unique host gifts.

Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair
by Pablo Neruda An excerpt from one of my favorite poems, “Tonight I Can Write” “I no longer love her, that’s certain, but how I loved her.
My voice tried to find the wind to touch her hearing. Another’s. She will be another’s. As she was before my kisses.
Her voice, her bright body. Her infinite eyes. I no longer love her, that’s certain, but maybe I love her.
Love is so short, forgetting is so long.”$9 at Amazon

Everything is Illuminated
by Jonathan Safran Foer Please read this book, it’s exceptionally satisfying. An excerpt: “She always saw through him, as if he were just another window. She always felt that she knew everything about him, that could be known-not that he was simple, but that he was knowable, like a list of errands, like an encyclopedia. He had a birthmark on the third toe of his left foot. He wasn’t able to urinate if someone could hear him. He thought cucumbers were good enough, but pickles were delicious–so absolutely delicious, in fact, that he questioned whether they were, indeed made from cucumbers, which were only good enough. He hadn’t heard of Shakespeare, but Hamlet sounded familiar. He liked making love from behind. That, he thought, was about as nice as it gets. He had never kissed anyone besides his mother and her… He had never seen another man naked, and so had no idea if his body was normal. The word “butterfly” made him blush, although he didn’t know why… He admired magicians more after learning the secrets of their tricks.”

A Working Girl Can’t Win
If you have an office full of women, this book of poetry by Deborah Garrison is such a fun gift – proof that poetry needn’t be inscrutable to be intelligent. My favorite poem:
The Firemen
God forgive me– It’s the firemen,
leaning in the firehouse garage
with their sleeves rolled up
on the hottest day of the year. As usual, the darkest one is handsomest.
The oldest is handsomest.
The one with the thin, wiry arms is handsomest.
The young one already going bald is handsomest. And so on.
Every day I pass them at their station:
the word sexy wouldn’t do them justice.
Such idle men are divine– especially in the summer, when my hair
sticks to the back of my neck,
a dirty wind from the subway grate
blows my skirt up, and I feel vulgar, lifting my hair, gathering it together,
tying it back while they watch
as a kind of relief.
Once, one of them walked beside me. to the corner. Looked into my eyes.
He said, “Will I never see you again?”
Gutsy, I thought.
I’m afraid not, I thought. What I said was I’m sorry.
But how could he look into my eyes
if I didn’t look equally into his?
I’m sorry: as though he’d come close, as though this really were a near miss.$8 at Amazon

Confederacy of Dunces
John Kennedy Toole committed suicide in 1969 and never saw the publication of his novel. Confederacy of Dunces is a hilarious and tragic book that explores the life of decidedly unlikable Ignatius J. Reilly. Excerpts: “Your total ignorance of that which you profess to teach merits the death penalty. I doubt whether you know that St. Cassian of Imola was stabbed to death by his students with their styli…Pray to him, you deluded fool, you ‘anyone for tennis?’ golf-playing, cocktail-quaffing, pseudo-pedant.” “Santa, honey, that’s a sweet little Blessed Virgin you got on top that TV,” Mrs. Reilly said. …Santa said, “Ain’t it nice, though? It’s a little Our Lady of the Television. It’s got a suction cup base so I don’t knock it over when I’m banging around in the kitchen. I bought it by Lenny’s” “Lenny’s got everything,” Mrs. Reilly said. “It looks like it’s made outta nice plastic, too. Don’t break.” “My mentality, uncontrollable and wanton as always, whispered to me a scheme so magnificent and daring that I shrank from the very thought of what I was hearing. “Stop! I cried imploringly my godlike mind. ‘This is madness!’”

She mentions them whenever we see each other, and she sent me this note: “June Taylor has a booth on Saturday morning down at the farmers market where you can taste them all… Heaven in a spoon. I have three jars at home that you’re welcome to sample: Apricot, Pluot and Lavender and Rhubarb. All so good you might want to skip the toast and butter.” She’s right. So good, they make your tastebuds hurt.

Bubble Jewelry
QUICK PICK Update: Freddy, a very helpful reader, makes the excellent point that you wouldn’t want to wear magnet-based jewelry as a bracelet if you, say, work on a computer or use gadgets all day. So, buyer beware. Still, using it as a necklace or a pinless brooch is genius.

Could you suggest a good place, a little off the beaten path, to buy some flasks?” You two really know how to start a marriage off on happy footing. This is the most unique, yet non-gimmicky flask I came across. It’s brushed stainless steel and holds 7.1 oz. Sleek and reasonably priced. More options above.

Xocolatl Hot Chocolate
Delicious. Xocolatl (pronounced Choco-la’tl) emphasizes the “hot” part of hot chocolate. It’s based on a traditional Aztec drink that combines chocolate with a whomp of chilies and a little cinnamon. If you need a gallon of water to get through a tamale, don’t try this at home. But if you can appreciate a dessert with some kick, this cocoa is the spice of life.

Cephal-iPod
This is an iPod cozy shaped like a squid. He does not give you tentacle hickeys; he does not squirt ink on anyone who tries to take off with your iPod; but he does guard your tunes with his fierce googly glare and threatening tentacles. Full disclosure: The folks at Mule Design are pals of mine, and this is not the only cool thing they make. Your squid is handmade of craft felt, which keeps your iPod from getting all scratched up. May I suggest hot gluing a large pin on his back and wearing him on your jacket or belt loop? He will drive your friends wild with squid envy.

Leather Card Cases
BY READER REQUEST Just got an email with the following specs: “I need a business-card case that doesn’t suck and isn’t trying too hard. I got my very first business cards recently-much rejoicing-and am sort of at a loss for what to put them in. I want something functional, but not flashy. I don’t want something that screams “Can you believe I have business cards?! Woohoo!” because my personality does that very, very well. I also don’t want something that looks like a hand-me-down from my father. I’m the youngest person in my office, so I want to avoid anything too youthful; otherwise, I would so be using a Hello Kitty case already.” Congrats on the milestone, wage earner! These colorful leather card cases are energetic, but not immature. Technically, they’re set up like mini-wallets, but they’ll work just as well to stow your business cards. They come in seven different color combinations, so take your pick.

Toasted Head Chardonnay
I know it’s not particularly sophisticated, but I’m a sucker for a good wine label. Toasted Head wines have an adorable fire-breathing bear that’s smashing at a party. And, best of all, they’re relatively cheap and yummy. This chardonnay smells like apricots. It’s sweet, fruity, and bright. The name Toasted Head derives from the process of burning the barrel heads to give the wine a caramelized flavor. I don’t taste any caramel, but I can taste a bit of the oak. A great match for the chicken wings at your backyard BBQ.

Weleda Skin Food
This is my new favorite thing! First off, the scent is a blend of lavender, rosemary, and orange oil–so it smells clean and sweet. It’s for very dry skin, so when you first put it on it feels a little thick and gooey. Three minutes later, your skin will feel so silky that you’ll want to purr. You can also use it on chapped lips; it tastes faintly of oranges. I’d read about this stuff a thousand times, but I finally tried it because a reader and firm believer sent me some (thanks, Freddy). Try it. You’ll be passing it out to friends too.

If I’m going to spend three hours cooking something, it damn well better taste good when I’m done. Cook’s Illustrated is my favorite cooking magazine, because it eliminates much of the risk involved in trying new dishes. I also love it because it contains no ads. Every recipe is tested multiple times and compared against other alternatives. It’s the magazine version of “America’s Test Kitchen,” which is a television show that tests several versions of a particular recipe, and gives you the easiest, tastiest one. The magazine also compares different food products and gadgets and gives you recommendations. Once you subscribe, you get access to the online archives, which offer ten years of recipes and product reviews. Subscribe, you will like it. Sofia Mini Blanc de Blanc
Brilliant! I’m completely charmed by these flirty individual servings of bubbly. Ideal for celebration of personal triumphs. The design is entirely too persuasive. They come in a four-pack and have tiny telescoping straws attached to the sides. It’s the much giddier alternative to grabbing a six pack on your way to ladies night. Yes, you’re thinking, but does it taste like can? No. It’s actually quite good. I found it light, with a faint taste of green apples. If you like sparkling wines, you’ll enjoy this. I will say that when I tried sipping without the straw, I found the smell of the can a bit distracting. If you pour it into a glass, there’s no lingering aluminum scent. One can holds about two flutes’ worth. Finally, an inexpensive way to enjoy a glass of sparkling wine without ruining a whole bottle. I’m keeping a few in the fridge for Sunday-morning mimosas, but I expect to see the pink cans showing up for wedding toasts, bachelorettes, showers, beach picnics, and girls’ nights on the town. (Thanks, Amanda!)

Republic of Tea’s Ginseng Peppermint
I don’t usually like herbal teas, they tend to taste like a bunch of sticks floating in warm water. Glah. This ginseng peppermint tea, however, is tasty. It contains eleuthero (no idea), peppermint, cinnamon, licorice, and echinacea root. It’s minty, of course, and the licorice flavor isn’t discernable, but it leaves a sweet aftertaste in your mouth. The Four Agreements
Buy this book. It’s remarkable in its simplicity and power. The Four Agreements puts forth a few very simple things you can do to let go of your limits and better your life. The Four Agreements are: 1. Be impeccable with your word. Words shape your world, your viewpoint, and your relationships.
- Don’t make assumptions. There’s no sense in obsessing over events that may be figments of your imagination.
- Don’t take things personally. People do things because of what’s going on with them.
- Do your best. This helps you avoid self judgment. Just trying to live by these rules has rocked my life. I can’t recommend it highly enough, and I’ve forced it on many of my perfectly well-adjusted loved ones. Get one for yourself, and then one for everyone you adore. It’s small enough to fit in a stocking and brief enough to get through in a day. You will like it. (And Oprah likes it too.)

Every stitch on every bag is created with a needle in hand, and I don’t know how the woman doesn’t go blind. Each bag is entirely unique in its craftsmanship and its design; Kate never makes a bag twice. You can purchase one of her available bags or have a personalized bag made for your wedding, graduation, or anniversary. And you’ll get 10 percent off a bag if you mention that you saw it on Mighty Goods. Because Kate sews each bag so meticulously, she doesn’t currently work with retailers, so you can only get them direct from her. So, so lovely.

European Wine Glass
I love the laid-back feel of these European wine glasses, and they make a great inexpensive hostess gift. You can stack them for easy storage, and they work for red wine, white wine, or even juice. The heavy base feels great in your hand, and the casual bistro styling is nice for a fireside glass of wine or dinner at the backyard patio table.

Ofoto Calendar
I’d been looking around for a personalized photo calendar, and Ofoto had the most reasonably priced, easily produced option. You choose from one of eight designs, and then pick which photos you want for each month. You have to sign up for the service to order a calendar, but Snapfish offers one too, though it’s a bit tougher to make. With the Ofoto service, the easiest thing to do is to compile a “calendar” folder in advance, upload it to the service, and pull photos from that. This way, you don’t have to jump from folder to folder (and wait an eternity for each one to load). You can choose to start the calendar on any month you like, so it makes an excellent gift year round.

Fandex
Each Fandex takes a particular subject–dinosaurs, painters, mythology, presidents–and provides you with about 50 cards of information on the subject. The cards are fastened together at the bottom, so they fan out as you read them. Each has a picture at the top, and information on the front and back of the card. In the Body Fandex, for example, one card has a picture of the skeletal system and corresponding information. Surprisingly informative, and fun for car trips, Fandexes come in every flavor. In addition to those mentioned above, Amazon also carries Fandexes on the United States, wildflowers, trees, birds, explorers, the Civil War, American Indians, Shakespeare, first ladies, mummies gods and pharohs, New York, and cats.

Isaac Mizrahi Prism Handbag
Isaac Mizrahi, I could kiss you. This $15 handbag is a little piece of cha-cha. You can already hear the fish-scale sequins chattering while you dance. The 24-inch strap lets you sling it across your body and forget about it. While the other girls are looking for places to hide their purses, or lugging them around like grandmas, you can get straight to shimmying. The only thing you’re lugging is a martini glass, sweets. Plenty of room for your cell phone, lipstick, and a hundred-dollar bill.

Amarena Wild Cherries
I tried these for the first time at a friend’s wedding. The groom was a bartender, and these were the cherries they used as drink garnishes. They are nothing like maraschino cherries. The texture is dense, and the cherries have a rich, fruity flavor. They’re preserved in thick syrup, and are fantastic as an ice cream or cheesecake topping. Or drop a single cherry into a fizzing glass of prosecco or your evening Manhattan. They’re incredibly hard to come by online (in fact the site I’m sending you to doesn’t even have a photo of the product), but you can pick them up at Italian grocers, and Beverages and More carries them on occasion. Such a treat.

I like to smell like food. This line of perfume is fantastic because it offers dozens of realistic culinary options to wear behind your ears. I especially favor Earl Grey, Sugar Cookie, and Gin and Tonic. Of course, there are other options if you prefer to smell less edible. Consider Wet Dirt, or Laundromat. Perhaps you can alternate for days when you feel particularly dirty, or squeaky clean.

If you own more than one glue gun, you’ll probably dig this magazine. Learn how to turn old hardcover books into picture frames, build a small guest cottage on the cheap, or just see how artsy types are putting their homes together. Like Martha Stewart, but with a more modernist aesthetic and less criminal activity. If you have a DIY hipster in your life, a subscription makes a great gift. Delicately Hot Caramel Dessert Sauce
Holy yum! Tina Tovey wrote in to tell me about this sneak-attack sauce, and I owe her one. At first it tastes exactly as you’d expect–a mild, silky caramel. The magic is in the aftertaste. Once the caramel flavor fades a bit, the sauce is spicy. In fact, it’s got quite a kick. So good, I felt like dancing around with my spoon. Eat some, these Cowgirls know their stuff.

Mrs. Dalloway
Mrs. Dalloway, by Virginia Woolf, is about how small, seemingly unimportant things can overtake us; how yearning can succumb to expectation. Just thinking about this book makes my throat ache. The novel follows Clarissa Dalloway through a single day of her life as she prepares for a party. The reader is privy to her inner life and how it has colored the lives of her intimates. It’s a complex read, and I was lucky enough to have smart people guide me through the first pass. It’s written in stream of consciousness, which some people find confusing. If that spooks you, buy the Cliff Notes to help you through. If you’re still confused, send me an email. Seriously. I want you to love this book.

Dagoba Dark Chocolate Lavender Bar
Dagoba makes all kinds of organic, flavored chocolates. They have mint, coffee cinnamon, and chai; but lavender is the best of the lot. The bar is 59 percent cocoa, and the lavender essence is offset with dried wild blueberries. The effect is a crisp, tart flavor undercut by the deep bittersweet of the chocolate. Sprinkle a few shavings atop a chocolate torte, or add a square or two to a cup of hot coco. The spicy aftertaste will win you.

Travels with Charley
When John Steinbeck was 58, he took some care outfitting a camper and set out on a drive across the United States with his pet poodle, Charley. In this non-fiction work, Steinbeck recalls their three-month journey and what he learned about Americans along the way. This is a beautifully written, joyful book. Take a copy along on your next road trip. Some excerpts: “It occurs to me that, just as the Carthaginians hired mercenaries to do their fighting for them, we Americans bring in mercenaries to do our hard and humble work. I hope we may not be overwhelmed one day by peoples not too proud or too lazy or too soft to bend to the earth and pick up the things we eat.” “I have always lived violently, drunk hugely, eaten too much or not at all, slept around the clock or missed two nights of sleeping, worked too hard and too long in glory, or slobbed for a time in utter laziness. I’ve lifted, pulled, chopped, climbed, made love with joy and taken my hangovers as a consequence, not as a punishment.”

Mrs. Richardson Butterscotch Caramel Topping
It is a complete pain in the rear to melt or make caramel for a sauce. Skip the sugar burning and the pan scouring, and pick up a jar of this dreamy sauce. In stores, you’ll find it with the ice cream toppings, but I use it on popcorn or as a dip. The next time you have friends over, cut up some apples. Then, pour a jar of Mrs. Richardson’s over a block of cream cheese to make an apple dip. Keep an extra jar on hand to spare guests the indignity of licking the bottom of the bowl.

2-Zip Dopp
I’ve had this dopp kit for years now, and it’s one of my favorite gifts. If your employees travel a lot, this is the perfect dopp kit.
The bag is spacious, has a water-resistant interior and a stain-resistant exterior, and is made of good-quality materials. Also, it comes in orange, lime, pink, light blue, and red. I keep my travel toiletries and an extra toothbrush inside, so I can just throw it in my suitcase without thinking too much. It has this handle that unzips two zippers at once, giving you wide-open access to the top of the bag so you never have to rummage around for anything. It has one interior-zip pocket, which I use for small stuff like bobby pins and hair bands, and a small exterior pocket, which is great for jewelry or keys.

Dwell bills itself as the magazine for “nice modernists.” I think of it as a magazine for people who wished they’d gone into design or architecture in college, but instead decided to major in lit. (Projection alert.) Dwell is committed to simple, open, modern living, and I owe the layout of my living room to designs I’ve ripped from its pages. Of course, their living rooms are in homage to Eames, and mine is courtesy of IKEA, but the inspiration is the same. Junipero Gin
Junipero is a beautiful gin. It’s a pet project of the brewmaster at Anchor Steam in San Francisco, and is made by hand in a small, copper-pot still. Martini Republic’s description hits it on the head: “Clean but not light like Plymouth. It is smooth but not the least bit tame, the spices shining through and the finish leaving a bit of a tang in the nose. The aroma is not as strong as Sapphire, nor as mediciny as Bombay.” Pour it over some crisp ice, give a brief stir, and ease it into your martini glass. A breath of vermouth is all you’ll need. Now find someplace to put your feet up.

Franklin Pagemark Dictionary
So you’re reading, and you come across a word you don’t know. You: a) stop, set the book down, and lug out your ten-pound dictionary, b) underline the word and promise yourself that you’ll look it up later, or c) turn the page and live on in ignorance. If you tend to fall into the “c” category, things might be easier if you had a dictionary the size of a bookmark. Steep Teas
Tea is good for you. It warms you up, calms you down, and gets you good and thinky. Forget the mug of bitter black water with a limp Lipton bag stuck to the side. Bah! Treat yourself to a tidy little package of quality, whole-leaf tea that tastes as good as it makes you feel. Steep tea is a small, hip company made up of people who obviously love what they’re doing. They mix their own tasty blends, and the flavors are always changing. Steep also has a handy caffeine-content rating system, and their package design is amazing.
