  • Passionate for Pumpkin

You know its fall when pumpkin/pumpkin spice-flavored everything hits stores and restaurants. Pumpkin bread with a pumpkin spice latte for breakfast? Donít mind if I do. Pumpkin soup for dinner with pumpkin cheesecake topped with pumpkin ice cream for dessert? Yes, please!! Ready for a couple new ideas on what to do with the olí orange gourds? Read on!

Get glowing! One of the reasons pumpkin is so good for you? Itís loaded with healthy antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals! Raid the pantry and give yourself a pumpkin facial, buff your bod with pumpkin body scrub, and finish it off with an exfoliating, tightening papaya pumpkin enzyme mask. And no, none of these will turn your skin orange. (PS Ė Anyone up for an at-home pumpkin-themed spa party? Weíll bring the wine!)

Gardening, anyone? After Halloween, chop your Jack-o-Lantern into big pieces and add it to your compost pile. The nutrient-rich flesh makes great fertilizer and could really make a difference in your veggie, fruit, and flower gardens next year.

Smoothie time, baby! If youíre one of the many who swear by daily fruit-and-veggie smoothies to get your nutrition in, have we got a treat for you! Pumpkin puree freezes beautifully in ice cube trays, after which you can quickly toss them in freezer bags to have ready for a healthy vegan treat, a new twist on a banana-yogurt smoothie, or go all out and treat yourself to the Pioneer Womanís decadent pumpkin pie in a glass.

Oh, and one more thing: Weíve all had pumpkin bars, pumpkin-and-chocolate brownies, pumpkin soup, and even pumpkin pizza (trust me, itís divine - roasted pumpkin wedges, sage leaves and fontina cheese on crust, no tomato sauce), but this Armenian pumpkin stew recipe takes the cake (ha) for the most unique, tasty pumpkin-based recipe Iíve ever found. Itís easy to make vegetarian by omitting the lamb meat and swapping the chicken broth for vegetable broth, and a great way to clear out your spice cupboard to boot.

  • The Big Snipture

Every month, I get a pile of fashion magazines that love to tell me I should have long hair! Short hair! Red hair! Pink hair! Bangs! Curls! Straight! Waves! You get the picture Ė itís never the same two months in a row, or even from magazine to magazine. Most of the women I know (myself included), however, have been rocking pretty much the same style for years.

Sparkly teal eye shadow can be wiped off at the end of the day. Killer five-inch studded heels kicked off. Acid-washed jeans shudder burned in a heap. Hair is another story. It takes time to grow tresses out from a disastrous cut, and hair is a huge part of our identities as women.

Iíd always wanted a cute pixie cut a la Ginnifer Goodwin or Michelle Williams, but the thought of it not looking like ďmeĒ and then having to grow it out (with the inevitable mullet/Robin Hood pageboy stage) for a year or more was just painful.

Finally, something snapped one morning as I was painstakingly blow drying and flat ironing my shoulder length hair, a process that took the better part of an hour. I was sick of being a slave to hair that never did what I wanted it to anyways. I wanted freedom. I wanted to sleep in an extra hour in the morning. I wanted SHORT HAIR.

I made an appointment. I canceled the appointment. I made it again, and I canceled it again. I made it a third time, and had a friend come with me to the salon for moral support.

Not gonna lie, that first SNIP made my knees week and my mouth go dry. Watching those long brown waves tumble to my feet felt like losing my security blanket. Eventually, I squeezed my eyes shut and told the stylist to wake me when it was over. And thenÖ

Oh, YES. This was it. This. Was. ME. I felt lighter, freer, and happier than I had in a long time.

Iíve yet to have a week go by where I donít get stopped by a random woman telling me how much they love my hair cut, and how they wish they had the guts to do it. ďGo for it!Ē I tell them, ďItís one of the best decisions I ever made! ď I doubt many of them listen, but if even one gal shears off her ringlets and loves the cropped pixie staring back at her in the mirror, then Iíll be a happy woman for the rest of my life.
