  • The Big Snipture

    The-big-snip-ture

Every month, I get a pile of fashion magazines that love to tell me I should have long hair! Short hair! Red hair! Pink hair! Bangs! Curls! Straight! Waves! You get the picture - it’s never the same two months in a row, or even from magazine to magazine. Most of the women I know (myself included), however, have been rocking pretty much the same style for years.

Sparkly teal eye shadow can be wiped off at the end of the day. Killer five-inch studded heels kicked off. Acid-washed jeans shudder burned in a heap. Hair is another story. It takes time to grow tresses out from a disastrous cut, and hair is a huge part of our identities as women.

I’d always wanted a cute pixie cut a la Ginnifer Goodwin or Michelle Williams, but the thought of it not looking like ME and then having to grow it out (with the inevitable mullet/Robin Hood pageboy stage) for a year or more was just painful.

Finally, something snapped one morning as I was painstakingly blow drying and flat ironing my shoulder length hair, a process that took the better part of an hour. I was sick of being a slave to hair that never did what I wanted it to anyways. I wanted freedom. I wanted to sleep in an extra hour in the morning. I wanted SHORT HAIR.

I made an appointment. I canceled the appointment. I made it again, and I canceled it again. I made it a third time, and had a friend come with me to the salon for moral support.

Not gonna lie, that first SNIP made my knees week and my mouth go dry. Watching those long brown waves tumble to my feet felt like losing my security blanket. Eventually, I squeezed my eyes shut and told the stylist to wake me when it was over. And then…

Oh, YES. This was it. This. Was. ME. I felt lighter, freer, and happier than I had in a long time.

I’ve yet to have a week go by where I don’t get stopped by a random woman telling me how much they love my hair cut, and how they wish they had the guts to do it. “Go for it!”I tell them, “It’s one of the best decisions I ever made!

I doubt many of them listen, but if even one gal shears off her ringlets and loves the cropped pixie staring back at her in the mirror, then I’ll be a happy woman for the rest of my life.
