A Lovely Planet Founder Hayley Lewis Shares Her Best Travel Essentials

I’m Hayley, I write the travel blog alovelyplanet.com, as well as writing about travel for a number of other publications. I’m originally from the UK but have been living in Australia for the last few years, which is great as I love water-sports and am currently learning to surf.

How and why did you get into traveling?

I started travelling from a young age. I don’t remember the first flight I took as I was a baby, but I had friends and relatives in France and Italy who we visited often. A big influence was my grandmother, who was travelling to Australia from the UK until her later 80’s which I find amazing. My first big trip was at 21, when my sister and I travelled for six months around South America, NZ, Australia and Asia.

How do you finance and prepare for your adventures and travels?

I try and save as much as I can to spend on travelling and pay for around 50% of my trips. The rest, I am hosted through press trips and media famils. I work as a producer alongside travel writing which seems to be a good combination so far! To prepare for trips I read travel blogs, Lonely Planet guides and ask friends for recommendations, as well as looking at Instagram for inspiration.

Why is traveling important for you?

I feel that I’ve learnt a lot about myself and about other cultures through travel. Sometimes it can be challenging and scary, but mostly it’s amazing and eye-opening.

How do you bring your things with you?

I try and travel light, which isn’t always possible. I use different types of bags for different trips. I love Osprey packs, I’m an ambassador for them, and they have bags to suit a lot of different situations. I also have a Roxy suitcase which I’ve had for over 10 years and is still going strong.

How do you organize things in your bags?

I tend to lay everything out on a table/the floor as I’m packing, then shove everything in at the end. I have a dry bag which I use for keeping my camera gear in. Waterproofing is really important as my cameras and laptops are my most valuable items. I also like bags with different compartments which makes it easier to organise and find things.

How do your bags and gear hold up?

Osprey bags are great quality and so I’ve not had a problem to date. My Roxy suitcase is a little battered but still pretty good for the amount of travelling I’ve done. I wouldn’t change them!

Any gear you wish you had brought with you from the beginning?

Nothing off the top of my head. My camera is my most important item and I invested in a Nikon DSLR a few years ago which I love. I also love a face mist for plane travel, so refreshing!

What has been your best travel-related purchase below $100?

All essential for plane/train bus travel:

  • Face mist $3
  • Ear plugs $5
  • Eye mask $5

What is your best advice for other travelers?

Don’t wait for the right time. Just do it. You won’t regret it.

What will the future bring?

More environmentally friendly travel options and quicker plane journeys between Australia and the UK.
