I’m Tamara Elliott, and I’m a travel writer and blogger based in Calgary, Canada. In 2013, I founded the website GlobeGuide.ca, which highlights unique experiences and destinations all over the world and shares savvy travel tips.

My favourite type of trip is one that combines adventure and luxury, such as spending the day hiking or cycling, then heading back to a cute hotel for a glass of wine and a hot tub.

How and why did you get into traveling?

Since my friends and family were always asking me for travel advice, I started Globe Guide as a virtual scrapbook to keep track of my adventures. I figured it was easier to put it all in one place online, instead of always answering emails! Most people are surprised to learn that I didn’t take my first international trip until I was 18, when I spent a week in Cuba. That clearly sparked some wanderlust in me, because I’ve now been to 58 countries. I’ve always had a full-time job yet managed to find ways to make the most of my vacation time, and now that I’m a travel writer it’s my actual job. How lucky am I?!

How do you prepare for your adventures and travels?

When I plan a trip, I usually start by Googling images of the place to get ideas for the popular spots and landmarks, then read a Lonely Planet guide to get an overview of the destination. After that, I start working on logistics such as how to get around and how many nights I’ll want to stay in each place, then read other blogs to learn more about other people’s experiences there as well as note any tips they might have.

I travel about 100 days per year, and you can usually find me at the gym every single day that I’m at home to stay in shape. I enjoy being active, so even when I’m on the road, I find ways to keep moving, such as walking or cycling instead of taking a cab, or hitting up the hotel gym.

How do you finance your travels?

Travel writing is now my actual career, so I usually work with tourism boards or brands to promote their destinations….can you say dream job?!

How do you bring your things with you?

To save my back from lugging a heavy bag around the airport, I always travel with a carry-on size roller bag no matter where I’m going. One trick I’ve picked up is to keep a small backpack inside with everything I’ll need during my flight, which I pull out once I board then stash my roller bag in the overhead bin without having to dig through it.

How do you organize things in your bags?

Eagle Creek Packing cubes are a game-changer. When it comes to keeping my suitcase condensed and organized. I’m able to fit in so many more clothes, and if I plan appropriately I can also arrange them by outfit which is a big time saver.

What has been your best travel-related purchase below $100?

Some of my favourite travel-related purchases have to do with sleeping- it’s hard to have fun if you’re exhausted, so I like so set myself up for sleep success on the road. I always use an eye pillow to block out light, and a roll-up pillow for the plane, camping or when I find myself in a hotel that doesn’t have comfortable pillows.

As for other favorite gear, I love my MEC Temblant Jacket. This puffy coat is super warm and durable, yet folds down nice and flat for travelling. I’ve worn it everywhere from trekking in Patagonia to a tiger safari in India, and it always keeps me cozy. It also works as a pillow or blanket on the plane.

What is your best advice for other travelers?

I think it’s important to do as much research as you can ahead of time, since the last thing you’ll want to do on vacation is sit there on the computer trying to book accommodation, figure out a train schedule or find the best day trips. It’s important to leave a bit of flexibility in your schedule, but try to have a general idea of what you want to do in the destination and where you’ll be staying which can save you both time and money.

What will the future bring?

My ultimate travel dream is to go to South Africa and explore Cape Town, the Stellenbosch wine region and of course a safari. Let’s hope I can finally make that happen this year!
