Buyers guide

Wayne Gregory at the age of 14 designed a backpack that impressed Andy Drollinger who was the founder of the San Diego California Adventure 16. Andy encouraged Wayne as he was impressed with his design and Wayne learnt as he tinkered with different backpack ideas at the factory premises of the company. By the seventies Wayne started Sunbird, his first company in the seventies, which was on external frame packs. He was unhappy with how the company performed and dissolved it in three years, working on bag designing since then, as a freelancer.

Wayne then went back to backpacks and designing the same by the late seventies when he founded the Gregory Mountain Products, a registered company in San Diego. Wayne was meticulous about how he designed the packs and worked upon both the fit as well as the use of the right materials. He would research with the current designs and materials available in the market and speak to his customers to understand their requirements as well. He understood that the fit was the main aspect in the backpack business and he designed bags with varying waist belts, harness and frames.

What Gregory bags have in common?

Among the unique features that he incorporated in the backpack designs of his company, Wayne included several features that are characteristic of the different bag designs even today:

  • A waist belt locking technique that helps to adjust a belt at different angles in the hip region, transfer the load accordingly.

  • Most of the bags feature a bar tack that is central locking.

  • Stitches that lock in at the center instead of the sides to increase strength at stress points.

  • They are known for innovative designs, comfortable and ergonomic fit as well as durability.
