This Travel Blogging Couple Has Built a 6-Figure Online Business While Living on the Road

Goats on the Road Nick and Dariece

We are Nick and Dariece, a travel blogging couple from Canada who took one long trip in 2008 after realizing that our life was missing something and since then decided to make travel into a lifestyle. We now teach others how to make money online and how to find jobs on the road so that they can travel for as long as they want.

How and why did you get into traveling?

We prepared for our first trip using a combination of travel blogs and guide books. We bought a massive map, which we placed under the glass in our living room coffee table. We added posted notes and drew lines of our proposed journey. It was a blast.

We do enjoy yoga and volleyball to keep ourselves in shape, but to be honest, the appeal of sitting on the beach with a cocktail or enjoying a wine and cheese tour is often times too tempting. 😀

How do you finance your travels?

We finance our travels completely through our travel blog. At first, we taught English and did some house sitting in order to supplement our income, but ever since 2014 our blog has been our sole source of income. You can read about our journey to a 6 figure blog here.

Why is traveling important for you?

Travelling keeps us stimulated and makes our lives more exciting. Without travel, we don’t really know what we’d do. We love meeting new people, trying new foods and being in a new location every few days/weeks. It’s become so much a part of our lives that we often get itchy feet after staying in one spot for more than a month.

How do you bring your things with you?

We have gone through COUNTLESS backpacks and luggage, but we’ve come to love our current backpacks. We talk about the best travel backpacks on our blog. For backpacks, we love Osprey and for rolling luggage we’re starting to like Samsonite.

How do you organize things in your bags?

We use zipper cubes to organize our bags. These handy little things keep our underwear separate from our warm clothes from our shorts, etc. We love these things and can’t recommend them enough. As for waterproof/water resistant bags, not that important. You can have a really good rain cover on your backpack or you can line the inside of your bag/luggage with a waterproof liner.

How do your bags and gear hold up?

We had some Numinous bags in the past and they were terrible. They fell apart shortly after hitting the road. We find Osprey bags last pretty good but they fit the best which is why we buy them time and time again. For pure durability, I think that the Deuter bags are the best, or possibly MEC bags from Canada.

We prepare and change things on the road all of the time. If we want a different brand or another company comes out with a different bag, we’d just upgrade. The good thing about Osprey is that they offer the “All-Mighty Guarantee” which allows you a lifetime of repairs, no questions asked. (no, we’re not currently sponsored by Osprey)

Any gear you wish you had brought with you from the beginning?

We currently have a Handpresso portable espresso maker and we love it. We picked it up a few years ago and as two people who don’t enjoy filtered or instant (yuck) coffee, we love to have this little thing with us. It’s heavy and we do have to purchase milk to make lattes, but with the right coffee grounds it makes the perfect cup of joe. 😀

What has been your best travel-related purchase below $100?

The handpresso for sure. Second up would probably be a boil coil to boil water in the room. 😀

What is your best advice for other travelers?

I think our best advice for other travellers is to know that if you want to keep travelling, you can. These days there are so many ways to earn money while you’re travelling! The internet and educational systems haven’t really caught up to the influx of travel and online work. Our blog has over 100 different jobs you can do online and on the road and we’re all about showing people that their trips never have to end!

What will the future bring?

The future will bring more travel and exploration for us. We hope it also brings more travel and experiences to more and more people around the world. Travel is a love, it’s a lifestyle and it’s meant to be shared.
