The Travelling Weasels Explain How They Fund Their Travel to More than 40 Countries

Travelling Weasels Laura and Tanbay

We are Laura and Tanbay – YouTubers, Travel Bloggers and Social Media Influencers. We are from the UK and Germany. We have been travelling the world together full-time since we ‘weaselled’ our way out of the rat-race in 2013. Since then we’ve been to more than 40 countries and started our own business. Right now we are in Budapest, looking forward to spending our first Christmas in Hungary.

We are both introverted (unfortunately) and most people would describe us as funny.

How and why did you get into traveling?

Initially, we started travelling as a way to save money! We realised we could use the money we were spending on rent and bills to travel full-time. We started off in Australia and it’s there that we fell in love with travelling and decided to never go back to an ‘ordinary’ life.

As for preparations, we do little to no planning before-hand, preferring to learn about the culture and history when we’re actually in the place. We keep fit by following a number of Sport YouTubers, and if we’re in a place for long enough we will sign up to a boxing class. We recommend taking as little gear as possible by keeping as many things digital as possible (in particularly, books).

How do you finance your travels?

Before Youtube, we saved enough money whilst I was finishing my degree in the UK. Right now, we finance our travels through our travel blog, Instagram and YouTube channel – we have a number of different travel sponsors.

Why is traveling important for you?

Travelling is so important for us because it’s taught us to see the world in a completely different way – by actually seeing it! It’s so easy to make assumptions about a place by listening to the media or stalking people on Instagram, but in reality things are very different.

How supportive are your friends and relatives of your lifestyle?

They are mostly supportive, a couple have been jealous which has come out as quite nastily, but the majority say we are inspirational and they’re proud of us. We’ve never missed an important family event, our lifestyle lets us come back for weddings/funerals, etc.

How do you bring your things with you?

We try and keep things as minimal as possible – it’s one of the main reasons we travel. We have one carry on rucksack each and share one small suitcase. This is still too much, but we have to make sure we have enough room for our equipment.

How do you organize things in your bags?

Our bags are cleverly designed with certain compartments for specific things e.g. leads, cameras, laptops, etc.

How do your bags and gear hold up?

We are happy with our bags. In the beginning, we brought way too many things that we didn’t need. Overtime we’ve managed to condense.

What has been your best travel-related purchase below $100?

My Oppo phone for sure because it is just a tenth of the price of an Apple phone but does everything Apple phones do.

What have been your most favorite destinations?

Favourite destinations: Hungary, Japan and the Philippines – all three have lovely people. We feel very much at home in Hungary and it’s a fun place to be. Japan is just crazy cool. And the Philippines have beaches straight out of paradise

What is your best advice for other travelers?

My advice would be to make travel what you want to make of it. In other words, don’t live up to anyone else’s expectations of travel, if you want to travel luxuriously do it, if you want to travel on a budget do it, but either way don’t let anyone feel like you are missing out not doing it the opposite way (e.g. budget travellers will sometimes say luxury travellers don’t actually get a chance to truly know the people/country and they might as well not bother leaving their home countries; luxury travellers will sometimes say budget travellers miss out by being stingy, etc.)

What will the future bring?

Soon we hope to do an overland trip of the world – aka without flying. We want to learn more languages and visit as many countries as possible together.
